Classic Yeats

by William Butler Yeats

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced among the mountains overhead
And hid his face among a crowd of stars.

Springtime for love

I smell the seeds of hope
A new day with no past
Forgiving knives of anger
Forgiving knives of pain
Forgiving knives of betrayal

I see myself in you
A beautiful damaged angel
Hiding wings of love
Hiding wings of hope
Hiding wings of despair

I look to Springtime
When the seeds will sprout
Bringing blossoms of life
Bringing blossoms of beauty
Bringing blossoms of never again

A Seasonal Affair

I met you in the Winter
Ice blue eyes ironic with warmth
A tornado affair moving at the speed of light

Our love grew in the Springtime
Beautiful like cherry blossoms
Endless like the ocean

Summertime brought heat
A passionate, rage of fire
Animalistic, idealistic, pessimistic

Love died in the Autumn
As I watched the leaves turn brown
I felt the smouldering coals of ‘it’s over’

Melancholy: sober thoughtfulness; pensiveness

Up on melancholy hill
There's a plastic tree
Are you here with me
Just looking out on the day
Of another dream

Well you can't get what you want
But you can get me
So let's set up and see
'Cause you are my medicine
When you're close to me
When you're close to me

So call in the submarine
'Round the world we'll go
Does anybody know
If we're looking out on the day
Of another dream

If you can't get what you want
Then you come with me

Up on melancholy hill
A manatee?
Just looking out on the day
When you're close to me
When you're close to me

When you're close to me
